Soho Textures…

February 8, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Lately I’ve been fascinated with texture and decay. I love witnessing the effects of long hard exposure to the elements. I always try to have my camera on hand to capture a bit of rust or worn masonry that may catch my eye. Last week I found myself in Soho, with camera in hand and an hour or two to spare. Within a few city blocks I found an entire universe of brilliant textures. There’s not much that can compare to the weathering effects of hundreds of Northeastern winters. Here are a few snapshots of what I found in Soho:

New York Madness…

February 8, 2010 · Leave a Comment

It was a whirlwind trip, out to New York and back again within the span of three days. The little sleep I got made the trip seem much longer than it actually was, but New York never sleeps right? I had very little downtime while there, maybe an hour or two. I managed to get a quick drawing in the sketchbook when I first arrived, laying down my initial impressions of the city. I’ll be back soon, to really absorb the spirit of the Big Apple, but this quick jaunt was a great first encounter.

The reason for the trip was a project that I’ve been working on at TAOW since mid-December. We produced an event to launch the adidas X Star Wars collection of sneakers in New York. I was involved in multiple aspects of the projects, the main part being the design & production of the collateral. The video below, from Hypebeast TV, captures the essence of the event. Snoop Dogg was on hand to unveil the Limited Edition Luke Skywalker shoe at the adidas Originals Store in Soho. I created a graphic to make the front of the store look like a bunker straight out of Star Wars, with an adidas logo blasted into the front. It was a great chance to flex my Photoshop muscle and see my work up on a large scale in New York. I’ll post a “making of” the large format graphic later this week, so make sure to check back.

Check out the video on Hypebeast TV below. I even make a cameo at 1:59, snapping a photo of the Doggfather with my iPhone.

NYC Bound…

February 1, 2010 · Leave a Comment

For the past month, I’ve been wrapped up in one of the biggest projects of my career. A project involving the largest science-fiction franchise in the world, an iconic footwear brand and a world famous intersection in New York City. I’m packing the essentials in my military surplus rucksack to fly out of Portland at 11:59pm Tuesday night. This will be my first time visiting New York, and it will be quite the whirlwind trip.

It’s highly doubtful that I’ll have any downtime while on the East Coast, but I will certainly have my eyes wide open and my camera at the ready. It’s been awhile since the Micron Hero has been on the road. Expect some good stories.

Jesica Hische’s ornate letterform explorations have been making their way throughout the web. She has already made it through the alphabet more than twice over, and shows no signs of letting up. Take a look at a few of my favorites below, then dig into her blog to find many more playful examples.

The Genius of the Crowd…

January 28, 2010 · Leave a Comment

By Charles Bukowski

there is enough treachery, hatred violence absurdity in the average
human being to supply any given army on any given day

and the best at murder are those who preach against it
and the best at hate are those who preach love
and the best at war finally are those who preach peace

those who preach god, need god
those who preach peace do not have peace
those who preach peace do not have love

beware the preachers
beware the knowers
beware those who are always reading books
beware those who either detest poverty
or are proud of it
beware those quick to praise
for they need praise in return
beware those who are quick to censor
they are afraid of what they do not know
beware those who seek constant crowds for
they are nothing alone
beware the average man the average woman
beware their love, their love is average
seeks average

but there is genius in their hatred
there is enough genius in their hatred to kill you
to kill anybody
not wanting solitude
not understanding solitude
they will attempt to destroy anything
that differs from their own
not being able to create art
they will not understand art
they will consider their failure as creators
only as a failure of the world
not being able to love fully
they will believe your love incomplete
and then they will hate you
and their hatred will be perfect

like a shining diamond
like a knife
like a mountain
like a tiger
like hemlock

their finest art

The Devil in the Details. 15×22″ Ink on Paper. Watercolors to come.

This illustration is a based on this sketch I made in my book 4 months ago. I plan on creating an entire series of fine-art illustrations in this format, based on some of my favorite pieces from my sketchbook over the past years. I’ve got quite a few pieces to choose from, so this should a good show.
