Adidas X House of Pain – St. Patrick’s Day

adidas_hop_flier_front

I’ve gotta start out by saying I love WordPress, it’s been a lot better here than Blogger. Not much more needs to be said about that.

Work has been busy as ever. This flier went out last week and the St. Patty’s Day sneaker drop is fast approaching. I designed it at Taow for the release of the House of Pain Ltd. Edition adidas Campus sneaker. I love doing vector illustrations of sneakers, so I really geeked out on this one. It was also quite surreal to do some work involving House of Pain. I definitely had some “Jump Around” in the discman as a kid. Wish I could be there to see it all down. I’d love to pay a visit to Concepts in Boston someday.

What should I draw?

daylightsavings_freeform

All too often, I make the mistake of asking myself the question “what should I draw?” This immediately limits the sketchbook exploration to something specific and defined. The alternative to this would be to just start drawing, and see what comes from the tip of the pen. The results are often surprising and exciting. The above piece is cobbled together from little sketches I’ve done in my off-time over the past week. I may start with a circle, then give it some eyes and perhaps a set of arms. Next comes a nose and the character continues to grow. Quick drawings like these are the fertilizer that great ideas come out of.

Design, as well as illustration, is usually intended to convey a specific idea or meaning. It’s easy to get caught up in the need to make sense. I spend most of my working hours organizing information, categorizing data and making things look good. In my off time I like to explore the possibilities of chaos, ugliness and the beautiful ideas that can come from just letting the pen move on the page.

What’s been happening…

Longhorne

I know this happens more often than I’d prefer. I’ve gone on too long without a substantial entry about the happenings of my creative practice. I’ll skip the usual couple apologetic sentences and get right into the meat and potatoes. May as well strike while the coffee’s hot.

I’ve started a part time job as the in-house designer at Taow Productions , a marketing agency located next to the Fremont Bridge in NW Portland. It’s good work, keeping my hands busy and my bank account regularly replenished. It’s thrilling to work with global brands on campaigns with a wide audience. I’ve had an itch to produce work on a global scale since I saw my very first published piece for SLAP Magazine in a small skateshop in Harajuku. I love the thought of something I’ve created travelling far, with a life outside of my own. Taow is great and I should have some work to show before too long.

The second major happening is Cut&Paste Digital Design Tournament , which is going down this Saturday at The Portland Art Museum. I designed the promotional material for the event. You may have seen my work already in last week’s Portland Mercury, or on the Mercury’s website. Basically, if you saw Cut&Paste last time it was in town, you’re in for a surprise. This year the competition takes place in 3 categories: 2D, 3D and Motion Design. My two friends Lisa Mirella and Drew Jasperse are competing in the 2D category. I’ll be working the Audience Design Challenge, where anyone can step up and try their hand at a 15-minute design. I’m very excited for Saturday. Hit up the site to buy tickets in advance.

Last but not least, I’m in the process of readying my new site for its official launch. It’s already up and running, but I’m not gonna promote it until it’s exactly where I want it to be. See if you can find it.

Typographic Epiphany

I’ve spent most of today building my new portfolio website. While updating the logo for the site, I had a realization. My initials create a pictogram of an elephant. This is the first time in my twenty three years of owning my name that I’ve realized this. This may seem absurd, but just see if your initials make up an animal.

While developing my portfolio, I spent some time creating this animated GIF. The file size is too large to work effectively on my portfolio site, but I wanted to get some mileage out of it. I spent over an hour keyframing the transitions.
