The Spirit of Las Vegas

A sneaky devil with a glimmer in its eye and a hand steadily on your wallet. It’s easy to let your guard down, but you’ve got to keep your wits about you when in Vegas. You can leave without much more than the shirt on your back. Fortunately I managed to avoid this sad fate. Quite the spectacle of a town, I prefer my home in the forest, thank you very much.

Las Vegas Lights

While in Las Vegas over the weekend, I took my camera out on the old strip to capture in my own way, the dazzling lights the city is famous for. I wanted to portray the blurry, intoxicated spirit of the city, rather than simply document what was before my eyes. I love the halo effect that’s created when you capture a light source in a way that’s perfectly out of focus. I don’t know how to explain exactly how this happens, but quite honestly I care more about how it looks than how it works. Here are five of my favorite photographs from the series:

The ivory pond…

An abstract sketchbook piece that I drew in Mid-November, then watercolored in January.

Drawn at the Las Vegas Airport…

PREMIUM FLARE…

Jelly planet…

I’ve been experimenting with freeform painting in Photoshop. There are so many brush settings to tweak. I could play around with it for hours. Experimenting with dip pens and watercolors in my sketchbook definitely helps the transition over to digital. I like the soft feel of this piece.
