A tuesday night sketchbook session

This cold, wet weather makes it pretty easy to post up on the couch with my sketchbook and let some shapes fly. As always, it’s fun to let things flow on the page with no premeditated composition. Things usually manage to coalesce into something interesting.

Drawings from the long weekend

I was happy to spend some time in my sketchbook over the long weekend. I’m getting near the end of this Moleskine journal. Hopefully I can have it filled up by years end. All I need to do is keep the ideas flowing.

The last of the gold

The Friday after Thanksgiving, we were lucky in Portland to get a little break from the rain. I took advantage of this window and went out with my camera to capture the last of the Autumn magic by the light of the golden hour. For all of the endless days we spend under a cloud here, the city makes up for it on days like this.

The Juan Maclean DJ set

My brother Peter has a gig in December spinning an opening slot for The Juan Maclean. I’ve been doing the Impulse night flyers for the past few month, so I was tapped to create a flyer for this one. I’ve been a fan since DFA records first hit the scene early last decade. I heartily recommend catching this one.

It started as a quick vector sketch to kill time, but ended as something I rather like. Working in vector form can be a battle sometimes, against the “computer-ness” of it all, but it can be overcome texture in most cases. I love being able to zoom in on the minute details, because you may have figured out by now that I adore the details.

Stay dry out there.

Last night’s drawing

Drawn at the end of a long day. A drawing like this helps me sort out my mental state. It’s a pretty cheap way to settle the nerves.
