It’s soggy outside, so I’ll stay in…

A week ago, Sarah and I looked at a two-bedroom apartment in North Portland. We decided it fit our criteria, ample space being the number one and aesthetic value being the second. We filled out the application form and paid the fee. The next day we heard from the leasing agent and the place fell into our hands. Saturday rolls around and I’m trying to get some client work off my plate, while slowly boxing up my earthly posessions. No moving takes place on saturday. Sunday hits and we’re under the snow, people are sliding all over the place. If you have lived in a place that experiences substantial snow on a regular basis, I’m sure your municipality knows how to cope. Here in Portland we can handle the rain, but when the snow hits we all turn into idiots. People are slip-sliding all over the place like a bad round of bumper cars. Every time it snows here it seems there’s a sledding related death, last year there were two. That being said, we haven’t gotten a chance to move anything into our new place. I’m choosing to stay inside and get some work done and do some drawing.

I’m thankful for drawing…

As I was waiting for dinner this afternoon I pulled out my sketchbook and found a nearby pen to do some free-form drawing. I’ve been listening to a bit of Blue Note jazz lately. I’m attracted to the improvisational nature of jazz and try to carry that forward in my work. This drawing was constructed by drawing a shape, then feeding the next one off of the previous. The pen led itself, improvising off the curves and junctures of the shape next to it. I’ve said it before, but drawing is very similar to composing music.

That being said, this thanksgiving I am definitely thankful for the spare moments that I can steal for some personal drawing time.

I like this one…

This guy will probably show up a bit more in the very near future. Painting perhaps?

Carpal Tunnel, anyone?

I’ve been in the studio all day and it’s made me a bit crazy. I’m doubled up on illustration projects so I’ve been working solidly since 10:30 or so. My wrists are feeling it. I’ve been working 6 days a week lately, saved only by my rule of not doing any work on sundays.

Cut & Paste is less than two weeks away. I’m hoping that my current state of busy-ness will serve as a trial-by-fire for the competition. I have no summer rust to shake off, I’ve hit the school year running. I’m in that state of mind where there is no premeditation, simply design instinct transferred into action. I’m looking forward to representing PNCA in the tournament. They’ve given me so much these past two years, the least I can give back is my very best effort.

Cut & Paste – Portland

Newspapers – Lakeview EP

I got my copy of the final, full color process printed album last night. It turned out better than I could’ve expected. Discmakers.com did a brilliant job on the printing. The cover is printed on a high-gloss, UV-coated stock that’s slick as all hell. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of getting something back from the printers. The music is awesome and it the whole thing goes well together as a cohesive package. The guys in the band have been awesome and fun to work with, allowing me all the creative freedom I could ask for. I’m proud to support their music with my design and illustration and look forward to future projects together. Now let me nerd out on the details:

This is the initial sketch I based the packaging off of, you can see elements that made it into the final version.

The album cover with the two main tools used to create it, micron pen for linework and wacom tablet for coloring.

I didn’t plan it, but the fills for the “Lakeview EP” lettering were left empty, so the mirrored surface of the disc shines through. You could say it’s a happy design accident that made the final product even better.

The illustration lines up perfectly with the plastic disc tray.

The back looks extra legit with the barcode in place.
