A quick color test…

A few lettering experiments

I sat down yesterday and sketched out a few quick word snippets. I wanted to play around with phrases that are short, yet evocative of some sort of emotion, or lack thereof. Then, using color and texture I tried to play up the emotional content of the words. It’s just a bit of experimentation but I like how these turned out; quick and immediate.

A quick coaster sketch, elevated.

Last night, as I finished up a drink at the bar, I started drawing on a beer coaster. The texture of the cardstock was the perfect texture and tone, it called out to me. The drawing took less than five minutes to complete, but the results were appealing in their immediacy. I think this is what I’ve been seeking, a simplicity that can only come with getting a bit of practice under your belt. Heaven knows I’ve drawn plenty of faces like this. I have a knack for complexity, but sometimes simplicity can speak so much louder. Philosophical ramblings aside, this guy deserved a place in the sky, so I gave him one.

Wild Color

I ventured out of the studio today and came to realize that it’s much better inside than out right now. Raindrops the size of marbles are whipped around by a chill wind until they fall crash into the hapless individuals on the ground. If color exists out there it’s subdued by the overall lack of natural light. This is why so much time is spent in the studio in Portland, we create our own color and light.

I spent the past hour or so coloring the Wild Style piece that I drew up over the weekend. I’ve finally learned how to effectively use clipping masks and I employed them heavily on this one. I’ve found that the more time I spend experimenting with the software the more comfortable I am with it and the less it impedes my creative process. The key is to get the boring, tedious stuff out of the way first. That way when everything is set up, like fills and masks, you can go wild filling them with texture, shapes and colors.

Stay warm and creative out there, we’ve got a long winter ahead of us.

Playing with light

I had a realization over the weekend, a culmination of something I’ve been thinking over the past few weeks. I need to focus a lot more on light. I tend to color a lot of my images as though they are a 6 color screen print. The fact is I have more than a million colors at my disposal. I also have quite a bit of processing power at my fingertips, so I can play around with lighting effects and whatnot.

This piece you see here is a sketch I pulled from earlier this year that I pulled out of my sketchbook. I worked in many layers of color and light to give it much more emotional depth. I’m playing around with different effects I can achieve with a color treatments. Expect to see a few more experiments of this nature in the upcoming weeks.
