Leather & Steel: the Roundhouse holiday gift

This holiday season I was tapped by my agency to design the holiday gift. After giving out shot glasses and beer coozies at the last party, the team decided to stick with the drinking theme. Coasters & pints came up in a brainstorm session. I have long wanted a set of the beautiful leather coasters that Tanner Goods sells in their Portland flagship store. After getting in touch with them, we found that they could produce custom designed coasters for us.

I immediately got to work sketching out concepts. As we’re heading into 2012, I wanted to play around with the imagery of the Mayan calendar. I love the cryptic complexity of the Mayan design. As you may have noticed from this blog, I don’t follow the school of minimalism. I strive for visually rich, complex imagery that rewards the viewer upon close inspection. I heard from my source at Tanner Goods that this design was the most complex thing they’ve ever stamped into leather, mission accomplished!

A brief update

April was a blur. Between a heavy workload and a move into a new house, finding down time has been a tough proposition. As I start to conclude a series of side-projects and settle in to the new house, I finally have time to process the goings-on of the past month.

I’ve landed at a great agency called Roundhouse and I couldn’t be happier. It’s good to be gainfully employed again. Plus there’s always a fresh pot of Stumptown whenever you need it. #score

The house is coming together. Here are a few detail shots that encapsulate the creative direction that Maryanna and I are going for…

Yesterday I volunteered for the first ever TED event to be hosted in Portland. TEDxPortland was an all-out success. The team that organized the event did a spectacular job. Photos will be posted very soon.

Today it’s supposed to be 70 and sunny. Our mission is to head out and soak up as much of it as we can while it’s here. Cheers!
